PHELPS GROVE PARK - One of the most treasured legends in Springfield, Missouri is that of the ghost bride of Phelps Grove Park. She is usually seen by this bridge (see below) but only in the evenings. Her wedding dress is very vivid. Those who have seen her can actually describe the lace in her white gown, train and veil. Unfortunately, there is only darkness where her face should be. The park is located at 800-1200 E. Bennett.

OLD TOWN PIZZA - It's hard to tell from looking at the photo below that this small booth was once an elevator shaft. Nina, a "lady of the night" was thrown down this very shaft and died instantly. She is a frequent "guest" at Old Town Pizza, always dressed in black and wanders in the basement.

Underneath the floor boards are the Shanghai Tunnels where walking and ghost tours begin. For more information go to www.portlandwalkingtours.com.

Old Town Pizza is in Portland, Oregon.

SHIPWRECKED BREW PUB - One can almost expect a building built in the late 1800s to be haunted but the ghosts that reside at the Shipwrecked Brew Pub are an exception in the fact that there are so many and what a variety.

When this author was allowed to go upstairs to the haunted room, I was given the key and instructed to lock it after I had finished taking photos. I didn’t have any problem unlocking the door, but leaving was a different story. The key worked fine; it should have locked on the first try but the minute I pulled the key out, the door opened slightly. My companion tried and the key didn’t work for her either. We tried turning it in a different direction. It remained unlocked and opened. An employee came over to help us. Within a second the door to Room 8 was securely locked.

When mobster Al Capon and his gang felt it was time to go into hiding, they headed to Door County. One of his favorite hang-outs was the Shipwrecked, which provided him with tunnels running in all directions when he needed a quick getaway.

Two IRS Agents, in the 1920s, came to arrest Al Capone while he was at the Shipwrecked. The Agents, some believe, got “lost” in the tunnels and have never been seen again. While they may haunt the restaurant, the agents aren’t the ghosts that employees and customers talk about.

As far as anyone knows, Al Capone doesn’t haunt it either but it’s rumored that Jason, one of his illegitimate sons, is still around. Jason had decided to turn his father over to the authorities but before he had the chance his body was found swinging in the attic. Instead of a suicide it is most likely that he was murdered before he could rat out his dad. Years ago, Jason would perch himself on top of the restaurant’s floor. Frantic phone calls would be made to the restaurant about a boy that was in danger of falling to the ground off the roof. Since renovations have been made, the sightings of the illegitimate son have been scarce.

At times the sounds of a baby crying can be heard and the staff believes it to be another illegitimate baby of the mobster. The mother was one of Al Capone’s “girls” who disappeared the day after the baby turned up missing. It still remains a mystery as to what happened to both of them.

The Shipwrecked is located in Egg Harbor. Their web site is shipwreckedmicrobrew.com

CIGARS AND STRIPES - This 80 year old building is full of ghostly activity. The owner and his wife have heard loud parties taking place downstairs but when they check them out, no one is there. Glasses fall off shelves and footsteps can be heard when there isn't anyone in the area.

The Cigars and Stripes is located at 6715 W Ogden Ave, on old Route 66, in Berwyn, IL. Their web site, which has a ghost cam,  is www.cigarsandstripes.com.

R.J. PEDDLER ANTIQUE MALL - An antique store located in a 1898 building is almost a guarantee of at least one ghost. The owner of the R.J. Peddler agrees since she has two ghosts; a little boy and male adult. A customer was bent over, looking at something on a lower shelf and when she stood up she caught a glimpse of a male ghost standing next to her in a large mirror. The little boy, who has been seen in the antique mall, might be the one responsible for merchandise flying off the shelves or rearranged from one spot to another. The building was once a bakery so it's not surprising when several customers have remarked that they could smell bread baking. The R.J. Peddler Antique Mall is located at 121 West Main Street in Mesa, AZ.

ADELPHI HOTEL - Walking through the Adelphi Hotel, which was built in 1914, you know it has to be haunted. The hallways are long and dark, the perfect atmosphere for a ghost or two. Spirits have been seen in hotel rooms, some standing at the foot of the guest's bed. One ghost called George, resides on the sixth floor. If you ever have the chance to visit Liverpool, England, make sure to spend at least one night at this historic hotel.

PATRICK'S ROADHOUSE - Located above the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica, Patrick's is a favorite hang-out for locals as well as celebrities. Bill Fischler, the original owner, must be very pleased to know that Patrick's continues to be a popular restaurant even after his death. The manager described Bill's ghost as "happy" and is more aware of his presence in the back of the restaurant. One waiter told me that whenever it sounds like pots and pans are dropping in the kitchen, the staff just assumes that Bill is letting everyone knows he's still looking after his restaurant.

This quirky restaurant has quite a following of celebrities especially on the weekends. Some of the stars that have been seen at Patrick's are Sean Penn, Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise.

Even if you don't run into any ghosts or celebrities, you'll love the food. Huge amounts, a big selection and reasonable prices. Trust me, you won't be disappointed . Patrick's is at 106 Entrada Drive, Santa Monica and their phone number is (310) 459-4544.

SHARLOT HALL MUSEUM - Located in a town resembling Mayberry, this museum sits among other historic buildings near the center of town. Certainly not the most haunted building in town, but one ghost who reappears to visitors and employees is that of a short, older woman. Late one afternoon a volunteer heard banging and what sounded like someone going through the files in the archives room of the museum. When she went to investigate she caught a glimpse of the ghostly lady. Sharlot Hall is located at 415 W. Gurley, Prescott, AZ

KINGS TAVERN - Richard King owned this building in 1789 and according to one legend, his mistress, Madeline, was murdered by Mrs. King. Madeline's skeleton, along with two males, were discovered in a sealed up fireplace in 1930.

Madeline, who is the most active ghost, keeps company with a baby ghost, a man wearing a black suit, and a Indian.

Employees love sharing their own experiences so don't hesitate to ask. You'll even be encouraged to explore the third floor where ghostly activity occurs frequently.

The Kings Tavern is located in Natchez, Mississippi and is well-known not only for Madleline but their prime rib as well.

MAIN STREET GRILL-This restaurant is located in the old Journagan home and formerly known as Mad Dawg Mel's. Ghostly activity occurs several times a week: bar stools scooting across the floor, lights going on and off and even bottles of A-1 steak sauce gets thrown across the room.  Several employees saw a set of child's footprints across the floor but there weren't any children in the restaurant at the time. Check out the photo below. In the original kitchen it appears I might have caught some type of energy on the wall. Or I might just have an overactive imagination. The Main Street Grill is at 202 West Main Street in Payson, Arizona.

LAWFORD THEATER-Like so many historic theaters, the Lawford is haunted by the ghosts of past actors. Cold chills can be felt behind the curtains and it is rumored that there is ghostly activity in the basement which I couldn't confirm.

The Lawford opened in 1914 and is located at 225 W. Main Street in Havana, IL.

REX ALLEN MUSEUM-The museum is actually housed in a building that from 1897 - 1919 was a tavern. Rex Allen who passed away on December 17, 1999 hasn't left the building yet. One resident of Willcox, Kate Dobson-Hunt, was walking by the museum late one evening and his songs were heard coming through the outdoor speakers. "It was just Rex's way of letting me know he's still around." she explained. And a ghostly cowboy was spotted leaning against a saddle (see photo below) that was on display. The Rex Allen Museum is located at 150 N. Railroad Avenue in Willcox, Arizona.

HANGING TREE - Jacqueline Stephens provided me with these awesome photos of the hanging tree in Natchez, MS. Orbs are seen clearly in both photos. The hanging tree is located on the westerly side of the Natchez courthouse.

Jacqueline and her husband own Fydeaux's Pet Company in Natchez and also offers ghost tours through their company Moonlight Productions. For information on their tours (or a cute outfit for your dog), call (601) 445-8811. You can also contact them at fydeauxs@bellsouth.net.

WHALEY HOUSE- The Travel Channel claims this is America's most haunted house. One reason might be the number of ghosts residing at the Whaley House. Men, women, children and even a fox terrier who scampers down the hallway. There is a small theatre on the second floor and the photo clearly shows, on the left, some type of energy. For more about the hauntings check out the Whaley House web site is www.whaleyhouse.org

THE OLD SPAGHETTI FACTORY-It may belong to a chain but that doesn't mean there can't be a ghost or two. While it was being used as a house in the early 1900's, the owner who happened to be sleeping in front of the fireplace (seen below in photo) was murdered .Is he the one responsible for moving items in the main dining room? Ghosts of a mother and daughter hang out in the attic. But who are they? And what about the woman who was murdered in the basement years ago? Is she the one who loves moving objects in the main dining room? Maybe she's also the spirit who flung a fork at a former secretary. This Old Spaghetti Factory is located at 1418 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ.

CAFE DE MANUEL- No one is quite sure just who was behind the ghostly activity and if the ghost is still around but just in hiding. The building started out as a home and this is where the elderly woman who owned it passed away. Could her spirit be the one who spooked the employees? Or was it the male clerk who was murdered on his shift when the building was used as a convenience store. The Cafe de Manuel's ghost let everyone know when he was around by clanging the pots and pans in the kitchen along with strange and unusual sounds. Although the employees tried not to be alone in the kitchen late at night, they sometimes miss their ghostly co-worker and wonder if someday he'll return. The Cafe de Manual is located at 1300 N. Pinal Road in Casa Grande, AZ.

KEILLOR'S A TEDDY BEAR AND GIFT SHOPPE - Every nook and cranny are filled with bears, plush animals and dolls.  Linda Keillor, the owner, isn't surprised when customers sometimes remark how they can feel a presence or ask if her shop has a ghost. They are probably referring to Agatha, Linda's ghostly old lady.  She's harmless although she does love to scatter stuffed animals on the floor after Linda closes up at night.  Keillor's web site is http://keillors-teddybears.com/ and if you're ever in Canal Fulton, OH, Linda would love to have you stop by.
