Haunted Sites

MISSION LA PURISIMA –This beautiful historic mission has several ghosts including a gardener, a soldier and of course, monks. I was told by a tour guide that a certain bed mysteriously becomes rumpled up after the covers all straightened. Of course, I had to try it out. I went straight to this haunted room (sorry, I can't remember which room it was) and pulled the bedding very tight. As it was suggested by the guide, I left for ten minutes to give this ghost enough time to stretch out, leaving a messy bed. Much to my anguish, the second I reentered the room, some bratty kid jumped up and started rolling on the bed. And his parents just smiled. Needless to say, I never did find out if there had been a tired monk that afternoon at Mission La Purisima. The mission is in Lompoc, CA.

HASSAYAMPA INN-Faith and her newlywed husband were to spend their wedding night in the Balcony Suite, Room 426. After checking in, he left and three days later still hadn't returned. Faith was so depressed she hung herself on the balcony. She is still waiting for the return of her husband and although she does roam about, most of the ghostly activity occurs in Room 426. A couple woke in the middle of the night to find the water running with the TV and radio blaring. There are reports that there are other ghosts in this beautiful hotel as well. The Hassayampa Inn is located in Prescott, AZ.

When ten year old Florence Ford died in 1861, her mother would go to the cemetery during thunderstorms to sit by her. Concrete stairs descended to the level of the casket so Mrs. Ford could sit by her daughter. Metal trap doors were installed over the area to shelter her from the rain. In the 1950s, a concrete wall was erected at the bottom of the stairway covering the casket because of reoccurring vandalism.
Of course, I had to climb the stairs myself, fighting off bugs and spider webs. Had I known then the horrific encounter one visitor experienced, I wouldn't have been so brave.
A few years ago a woman, her daughter and a groundskeeper visited Florence's grave. The mother climbed down the steps and a few seconds later, blood curdling screams were heard. When she reached ground level, her daughter saw that she was covered with a green film. She threw herself to the ground and tried to free herself of the substance by rolling over in the grass. The groundskeeper rushed to her side and began peeling off the foreign material. He was able to cup it in his hands and when he opened them back up, it evaporated as soon as it was released into the air.
The Natchez City Cemetery is located at 2 Cemetery Road just outside Natchez, MS. |

RED ONION SALOON - This former brothel is haunted by a female ghost who loves taking care of plants, even non-existent ones. Her ghostly image has been seen with a watering can in her hand, tipped as if she was watering plants, although there aren't any. Footsteps are heard coming from the second floor. If you're ever in Skagway, Alaska, you can find the Red Onion at 205 Broadway. |

LANDMARK NO 78 RESTAURANT - The next time you're in Ventura, CA, stop
by this wonderful restaurant. Not only will you have an
excellent meal but you might encounter "Rosa"
on the staircase. Poor "Rosa" was so despondent,

is also seen peering out the round window (see photo) on the second
floor. For more information on "Rosa", log onto www.landmark78.com.

M. Moggers in Terre Haute, Indiana is known for their Champagne Velvet beer and a handful of ghosts. A waitress spotted a male spirit leaning over the upstairs balcony
(see photo below) and when two employees heard footsteps they both turned and saw the ghost of a woman. She was dressed in yellow Victorian clothing and her hair was pulled back. Other spirits seen at this fantastic restaurant include a burly man always dressed in a flannel shirt and overalls, a "Gray Lady" and a male and female who were mistaken for customers. When the waitress approached them to take their order, the couple had simply disappeared. Employees love sharing their personal experiences they've encountered and the food is excellent so don't hesitate to stop by M. Moggers at 908 Poplar Street. |

PIERPONT INN & RACQUET CLUB - This beautiful resort in Ventura,
California was featured on the Travel Channel but it wasn't about
their wonderful food, although quite a bit of their ghostly activity does
occur in the kitchen area. A chef reported hearing a heavy, slow bumping
and dragging of something coming from the ceiling of the kitchen. Another
chef felt icy fingers stroke the back of her neck when she was alone
in the kitchen. And after almost bumping into a man in the
hallway, a food server apologized only to witness him disappear before her
eyes. Read more about the ghosts at the Pierpont Inn on
their website at www.pierpontinn.com
and while you're at it, download their recipe for lemon cookies.

Prosperity School Bed and Breakfast - Be sure and bring lots of film if you
get a chance to stay at his lovely haunted bed and breakfast in Joplin,
Missouri. One guest who spent the night in the Miss Rose Saxton's Room (and the
most haunted) took forty-six photos throughout the bed and breakfast and many of
them came back showing orbs floating through the air. The best one (see below)
was taken of the armoire in Ms.Saxton's Room where an amazing fifteen orbs were
captured. Make a reservation at this old 1907 school where owners, Janet and
Richard Roberts, will share their experiences that their guests have had, along
with their own. Their website is: www.prosperitybnb.com. |
